Crankshaft installed in block
100_0894.jpg

All main caps in their correct locations
100_0896.jpg

100_0897.jpg

All main caps torqued: 60 ft. lbs. on the inner 10mm nuts, 22 ft. lbs. on the outer 8mm nuts and 30 ft. lbs. + 90* on the (10) horizontal cross mounted main cap bolts (XF3Z-6345-AA). Nuts lubricated with ARP assembly lube and horizontal cross mounted main cap bolts lubed with engine oil.

Crankshaft end play checked with a dial indicator - .008"
100_0899.jpg

100_0902.jpg

Torque required to rotate crankshaft checked. Starting torque 10 in. lbs. and rolling torque is 5 in. lbs. That is the result of having a straight crankshaft and line bore and .002" oil clearance.

Now that the main caps have been torqued, I have reinstalled my BHJ Torque Plate so I can start the piston ring file fitting process.
100_0909.jpg

I will be using Total Seal Rings:
Top Ring (204397) 1.5mm Wide Chrome Steel Barrel Face Ring - .022" End Gap
2nd Ring (201679) 1.5mm Wide Cast Taper Face Ring - .024" End Gap
Oil Control Ring (002110) 3.0mm Wide 3 Piece Stainless Steel Scraper - Min. .015" End Gap
Rings will be gapped using a Goodson PRF-812 DW Powered Ring Filer w/optional deburring wheel

News to me.....

That is what JDM uses in almost all their modular motors.

Are you sure you're not thinking of gapless rings?

Do not use Total Seal GAPLESS ring sets in a modular engine. Total Seal makes standard ring packages however.

Ahh, thank you for the clarification. Trying to absorb all I can for my upcoming build. :)

Just as a follow up on this one for those of you who don't know.......this ring filer is around $700. Tells me Todd "ain't fuckin' around" on this engine.

For those of you that have gapped piston rings in the past, this Goodson ring filer is the shit!! I'm not just referring to the time it takes to file fit the rings, but also the quality of the job. This tool has an eccentric which allows you to make adjustments for different diameter rings. That is very important when it comes to having ring gaps that are perfectly square. This tool will also allow you to remove material in very fine increments to get the ring gap exact.

All rings have been gapped. Rings will be installed on Manley Platinum Series 9cc Dished Forged Aluminum .020" Oversize Pistons. This will result in a 9.8:1 compression ratio. These pistons are made with 2 valve reliefs so therefore they are not bank specific.
100_0914.jpg

All rings have been installed on the pistons. To avoid any confusion these are NOT Total Seal's gapless rings. These are conventional rings:
Top Ring (204397) 1.5mm Wide Chrome Steel Barrel Face Ring
2nd Ring (201679) 1.5mm Wide Cast Taper Face Ring
Oil Control Ring (002110) 3.0mm Wide 3 Piece Stainless Steel Scraper

Top ring has the dot facing up

2nd ring has the dot facing up

Pistons will be installed on Manley H-Beam 4340 Connecting Rods w/ARP 2000 rod bolts:
100_0915.jpg

You'll notice each rod's box is marked with the pin end and big wend weight
100_0916.jpg

Even though the reciprocating assembly was balanced, I have matched the light piston with the heavy rod. The number on the outside of the piston not only identifies which cylinder each piston/ring gp is assigned to, but the numbers also identify the pan rail side of the engine. When the pistons are assembled to the rods, all bearing tabs on the rods will point toward the outside or pan rail side of the engine.
