Sorry if this has been asked before; I searched and couldn't find anything...

I am curious though. I thought I read somewhere that there are more or "different" holes for oil flow, but I'm not sure. I'm thinking that the differences aren't significant enough that they can't be fixed or worked around if you were planning to use one for a build, but that's why I'm asking.

I read in a 4.6l book that they are the same "except minor machining" !?! It didnt go much more into it then that. this is a good question hope there's some good feedback.

piggy back question: can a forged 03-04 cobra crank work in the 05+?

Short answer: Yes. But you will also need an 8 bolt flywheel, due to the OEM 3V having a 6 bolt flywheel.

I know the coolant hose that runs on top of the block on the older 4.6's is different hence to different cooling applications for 2valves, 3valves and 4valves. I know the cobra crank will work in 2valves.

from what i have read (i dont have first hand experiance),motor mounts are different and to bolt a older block in you need adaptors,other than that you can use an older block, but they are iron and not aluminum like ours,so you will be adding some weight.the internals are also the same and will work in either block...like miracle said, you would need a different flywheel with a cobra crank.

ADAPTOR PLATE FROM mmr ,$79.99 so you can drop in a older iron block or teksid block into the 05+ body.

I used that adapter from MMR when I ran the Teksid block, and it was a POS. Both it and the block had to be modified to work. Look for something else besides the one from MMR.

The other difference I recall was the absence of a water passage on the Teksid block compared to the 3V block.

Coolant hole in the deck and the motor mount adapters. MMR units suck, as Don said.....SHM units are much better designed. That's it.

There is also a difference in the front of the block. Some older blocks don't fit our 3V timing covers quite right.

I'll dig for photo's that I know I have around somewhere that shows this.

Okay here's my crude attempt at coloring in the spot I'm talking about. The 3-V timing cover gasket folows this contour in the '05 block. Earlier blocks don't have this little extra bit in the block, so using your 3v timing cover on these older blocks, without addressing this, will lead to a BIG oil leak. Just ask lostsoul!

So, what's the fix for this? Do you have to have it machined?

I have 2 FRPP aluminum blocks that needed to have this particular problem fixed. I had a specialty welder local to me, fill in this area so the timing cover would fit properly.
The guy I used only works with Aluminum, and stainless steel etc... He filled it in so good it looks like it came out of the mold this way.

One of these blocks is in my car now, the other is one of my backups.

I just thought of another (relatively minor) difference...

05+ has knock sensors in the cylinder valley. All other pre 05 blocks didn't have them, except for Cobras if I recall correctly.

100 percent thanks we swapped a engine out from a salvage yard for a drift car and had serious oil leak issues. The engine was built ported heads forged etc.. but was built on a truck block. Here are some photos showing this hole in the engine that came out of our2008 that we blew up and the engine that we put in. Hope this helps someone!! Was a bitch trying to figure it out for us.
You can see the block doesn’t cover the entire hole on the one we just put in. .
