Didn't MM&FF do one of these within the last year or so? I bet there would be a lot of interest to do one again. We have a 3-4 folks that have got the stock block into the high 11s, and a good handful at 12.5 and faster. I would think the readership out there would be curious what it took to get the cars that fast, and also what seat time and a good driver can do. Lots of variables here--heads, cams, suspension, tires, etc., but that can be sorted out.

I think this came up as an idea last year, and JimIII tried to get something moving in short order, but I'm not sure that happened (or did it, at Cecil maybe??).

I think Scott's idea about a central location in the Carolinas is a good one, although I'd hope this could be pulled off spring or fall, not the damn heat of summer.

How much real interest is there? Are there posters from other forums that could be invited (the guy that pulled off the 11.75, for example)?

I know a couple people at MM&FF that I could mention it to. The last shootout was open to anything N/A with limited restrictions. I don't know how interested they would be in a stock shortblock shootout though. The guy that ran 11.75 is Carlos Sobrino. He is out of NJ so I am sure he would be down for a local shootout. Doing something ona Friday for example at Cecil might be a good idea. Probably the fastest track around.

1st, let me say I hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving weekend.

NA Shootout, look for the August 08 issue or online at the MM&FF website. Shootout was in April at Englishtown.

I believe Rockingham is a new Facility less than a year old. The Rock has my vote. We might have to expand the invitation to all NA Mustangs and maybe GM cars with a few limitations to ensure streetable rides. This should generate enough interest. This would also aid to keep the participant fees down for the track rental. I am sure MM&FF with GM HiTech Performance (sister mags) could get some mileage out of the coverage.

With enough interest we can distribute trophy's etc. We have conducted a Mustang\GTO event at Gainesville for the past 2 years. The interest is always high. 80 paid cars this past event on November 1st. Sponsor participation was strong as well.

The Rock was built back in 2005 I beleive, I first raced there in 2006 when I lived in Raleigh, NC.

Track is at 131' ASL and had some nice air most of the year. It is known as NC fastest Track..... I ran rny best there in 06 with intake, tune and gears, 13.26. It is a nice track..

I am in for Carolinas as long as it's not in late May - early September months. this track is open thru December and February reopens. oh and All motor N/A only would be a plus no bottles...

Richmond is another nice track but is closed for the winter.

Fayetteville motorsports park is right off of I-95 southern end of North Carolina... been there a few times not a bad track.

If this is done in the spring or later I am in for sure.

About 40 -50 cars at $65 a piece should cover the rental. The rest can cover awards, etc...

I talked to Mike Johnson today from 5.0 magazine and told him what we were trying to do and he said if we do it right it may be something he will cover for the magazine. I would also like to see this happen at Cecil County in Maryland. It is still a 10 hour drive for me, but that is a fast track and is probably more centrally located to grab a lot of the east coast guys. I told him it is still in the beginnings, but here is an idea for multiple classes:

1. must be 05 and up mustang

Class A:
05 and newer mustang
stock motor from top to bottom. (Will be allowed all bolt on's. Can remove passenger and rear seats. Must have rest of interior in car.)

Class B:
05 and newer mustang
same as class a, but will allow head work, and cams

Class C:
05 and newer mustang
1 power adder allowed, same weight reduciton rules as above.

Class D:
05 and newer mustang
Run what you brung. Open

Those are just some thoughts, what do you guys think ?

Man, I was hoping to get a handful of us together and have some fun, but everyone's ideas and enthusiasm is making it real, brilliantly so! Note you can chop 3 hours off I think if we pick a NJ track, but I've never raced up there (oddly enough) and don't know how they compare to Cecil. Frankly, MIR is better more often than not, but I think the real estate adage "location, location, location" is more important, and finding an acceptable middle ground for travel important. But if everyone is on board with any Maryland track, that makes it very easy for me.

With the classes above, with the proper participation, the S197 forum members alone could make this interesting. Get the major east coast tuners involved (JPC, JDM, Woodbine, even Brenspeed, Excessive, many others) and we could have a womping good time that would be great advertising for all.

We're getting to the point we're going to have to think about properly managing this as a real event. I'm happy to sit on this committee and volunteer uber time on this. If someone would like to think of a weekend near the looming holidays (new year's weekend, perhaps???) I'd be willing to travel and stay overnight to meet with folks and start proper planning, division of labor, develop a plan and start executing.

Sounds like a good idea. I would like to sit in on this board as well. Lets see if we can get Scott (2k05gt) to host... Scott?

I say this, because if we are going to rent an MD track, we should HQ in or around MD. Esp if we are going to have to visit the track to workout logistics.

Not that I'll be able to make an east coast trip, but how do these two classes even fit into an "NA" shootout?

Don, good point (I didn't even catch the nuance, to be honest) but I think an S197 shootout across these classes will demonstrate the capabilities at various levels. We'll have to see how it floats with candidate sponsors, and with the drivers and owners who have an interest in this kind of event. With this being THE premier s197 information site, I'm sure there will be plenty of input and ideas and constructive criticism coming in the upcoming months as we move forward, assuming the interest is there. So keep 'em coming.

Marc, Scott and I (and anyone else in the area) are hoping to meet during the new year's weekend to start discussing realities, and figure out track, month, sponsorship, etc. My biggest concern is insurance since this is a competition compared to simple drag rental testntune...
