Having an extensive electrical background, I just cant bring myself to use a hose in the engine compartment. It goes against everything I have known for the last 20 yrs. electrical components + water = bad. Haha. I know, of course, that it would be fine, but still can't bring myself to do it. I hand wipe everything.

Warm engine, and spray it down with diluted purple power, close the hood and let it sit for 10 minutes(you may want to cover any billet stuff though)..after 10 minutes spray it down lightly with water. Grab an air hose and dry it completely. Final spray down with Turtle Wax F21..Showroom ready..

If you have anything under the hood that's anodized, be careful what you use as a cleaner. Lots of them will remove it (Simple Green is REAL good at it), but I can't remember what the offending ingredient is.

Anyone tried Black Magic's no cover engine shine? Supposedly you don't have to use water or cover sensitive parts like the alternator. Don't know how much of that I believe but if someone else has had good experience with it I guess it would be worth a shot.

I've used it on my S197 V6.
It's not bad. It's more of a cleaner than a detailer, though. It cleans up alright. I just spray the engine bay down, spray it with the Black Magic stuff, have a cigarette while it sits, and then spray it down again and run the engine for 10 mins to dry off the engine bay.
It's not a bad product, but I imagine the ways mentioned in this thread are alot more effective.

I just use a damp towel.

I guess if you go many miles between cleanings, you may have to bust out the heavy artillery, but I've never let it get really dirty. Biggest trouble spots for me are the creases on the intake manifold and the valve covers...I think I should use Q-tips for that.

Some sort of tire shine, I suppose, would work OK to give a glossy look to the plastic parts.

+1 for bingo, keeping it clean on a regular basis means no necessary heavy duty spraying and what not.

I would suggest using a very diluted solution of all purpose cleaner or degreaser maybe 12:1 or 10:1 and avoid any problem areas (i.e billet and what not) then spray off. I personally use DP Engine Degreaser, and while you don't need a strictly engine degreaser, most APCs and degreasers will do the job. I just think simple green can be a little to aggressive unless it is diluted down heavily but thats just me so...

Tire Shine will work well but I would grab some sort of Vinyl Spray i.e. Aerospace 303 Vinyl Cleaner coupled with AS 303 Protectant, Megs #40 Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner, 1Z Enszett Plastic Deep Cleaner with 1Z Einszett Vinyl Rubber Care and Protectant. They might not provide the same level of shine as a Tire Shine (close) but will last much longer and keep the vinyl/rubber/plasctic looking good and protected for a much longer time. :thumb:
