exhaust manifold stud

Looks like I screwed up today. I have some cat delete pipes and today I began working on the install. The upper bolts on the clamps holding the pipes to the exhaust manifolds are difficult to reach and there isn't enough clearance for most sockets. With a short socket it won't reach the nut and with a long socket the back end is against the catalytic converter. I ended up using a long socket with a swivel with the socket cocked to the side slightly.

I got the right side broke free but couldn't budge the left side. So I buttoned everything up and took it to a buddy's shop. With his impact I ended up rounding off the nut but got it off. I tried to put a brand new nut back on the stud and the threads were toast so now I need to replace the stud. Where do I find one? NAPA? The dealer? A speed shop?

Try other local auto parts places; many carry various bolts/studs. Our Advance Auto Parts has such bolts, some, but not all; I've gotten a few from there.

If you get the stud out, you can always use a bolt on that one side instead.

Is there a gasket between the pipe and the manifold? I'm assuming there is, metal on metal couldn't seal that well.

A fastener store would be the best bet. FWIW I've never been able to remove those nuts without a pb blaster soak.

Do not buy just any bolt or nut. YOU MUST buy OEM studs and nuts. The nuts are special for exhaust system and are locking nuts so they don't back off. Use a stud extractor to remove the stud and buy one at the local dealership. If I look Carefully when u buy a new one. Look at the threads. They look weird. ( you will know what I mean when u see it) also there is no gaskets. The pipes are flared. Ford been doing it this way for Evers. Let me know if u need more info.

I had no gasket on mine when I switched to LT's and O/R H, it's a ball and socket type setup so it seals.

No gasket, it's a ball and cup joint, they seat then squeeze.

I have seen generic sized exhaust manifold studs at autozone and advanced auto. Otherwise, order it online.

Ford dealer has them, not cheap but they have them.

We were trying to match up the threads with other hardware and couldn't get any standard or metric nuts to work. 2-3 turns and then crossed.

I don't believe I'll need a stud extractor, these can be removed with a deep socket (hex section in the middle). I have one other stud that started backing out when removing the nut. I'll probably buy all four studs and nuts new, exhaust fasteners are always difficult to reuse.

You can get them for cheaper I bought four of them online I think it was fordpartsgiant.com don't have the part number around but I have two laying in my toolbox. I snapped two lol

I'm thinking I'll go ahead and remove that loose stud and then start hitting up the local parts places before proceeding further.

I found a package of exhaust studs hanging on a hook at the NAPA store. Three of the four original studs had the threads maligned at the end, resulting in both the studs and nuts stripping when you try to remove them. The car is almost new and it hasn't been touched before so I can only assume that Ford intentionally sabotages the threads to discourage modification/ removal of the cats.

All four studs and nuts are replaced and the cat delete pipes are installed. I had to cut the tape holding the O2 sensor plugs in place in order to get enough slack to reach the bungs. I used zip ties to secure the plugs again. I need to bend one pipe hanger back into place the next time I remove the rear wheel, I bent it pushing the pipes back when I separated the H pipe.

I used the NAPA ones. Its studs without the shoulder like the stock ones.
