You have to get all the foam material off. You will not be able to remove the factory glue, nor is it necessary. I found that sharp wood chisels work the best at removing that junk. My replacements are three years old now and still looking good.

For some reason the oil filter gasket tends to stick to the 4.6 block for a long time. My buddy had a 04 Bullit. His son changed the oil and the gasket stuck. He did not catch it soon enough and toasted the block.
