    5w-30 or 0w-30 in a 5.0?

Hey, OP here. FWIW, I ended up going with 5w-30 with no problems. As discussed on many threads, the chances are pretty remote that you: 1) Have a problem; 2) Ford does an oil analysis and; 3) They pin it on slightly thicker oil. Besides, 5w-30 is going to thin out to a thick 5w-20 over time...

    The Great Oil Debate

Soooooo, I'd really like to hear some cold shift experiences about the MTF, since the MTG seems to be rough. Anyone on here have experience with it?

big cloud of smoke on startup

As others have said: 1. There is a TSB for the long start-up. I had this once. After a reflash to the latest tune from Ford (for other reasons), have never saw this pop up again. Others, who had it happen routinely, report success with the new tune. 2. The puff of smoke on start-up is...

    transmission fluid mt6

As many have stated, there is a big difference in how this car shifts once the tranny is warm. However, for me, that seems to take much longer than the engine. Since it's not a DD, I can let the motor warm-up, but the tranny doesn't really smooth out until several minutes of driving. Has...

    The Great Oil Debate

Wouldn't this imply that that the MTG is thinning out (or breaking down) slightly to a viscosity that the tranny likes more? To me, that says the thinner MTL might work better. Still trying to decide which fluid to change to come spring . . .

    The Great Oil Debate

For those saying it is "normal" for all manual transmissions to be notchy when cold . . . Are you saying normal for all manuals, or normal for manuals that can take high HP? Reason I ask: I have a Passat 5-speed with 215k miles. The factory tranny fluid got changed out at 204k (to Redline...

    One More #8 Kids!

So, if I'm reading this right, you can reinforce the motor for somewhere around $2000-$2500 (Parts and labor, with arguably a good deal for the labor), then boost away without fret? Sounds like a wise expenditure before adding the SC . . . Now, if only you lived somewhere closer to the East coast.

    One More #8 Kids!

Sorry, slight (typo) error. Bottom line, the cost doesn't seem substantial. So, how much to pay someone to do all this work if you don't want to do it yourself? Does the motor have to come out?

Sadly, I read somewhere that Ford only saved itself $40 per car by not using forged pistons.

Are CAI's really beneficial for low mod 5.0's?

If you look around, you'll see that the CAI gains really are minimal. A tune with an aftermarket CAI (Steeda, JLT, etc) produces only about 5-8 HP over the tune with the factory CAI. I've heard some folks say that K&N drop-in actually produce no real gain (maybe 2-3 HP), with or without a...

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

I just read something else online about the numbers for Motorcraft. It was surprisingly good. I appreciate reading your 'real world' experience.

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

Feel free to click that little 'X' in the top right corner, smart guy. I wasn't being snippy with your response, only engaging in dialogue. The question is around the hot oil viscosity, that's all I was saying.

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

Yea, but theoretically, a 5w20, a 5w30, and a 5w50 all have the same cold viscosity (within certain perimeters). Question is whether the hot viscosity differences matter that much.

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

Great discussion, I appreciate the input. From what I'm reading, at full operating temperature, a 5w-20 might have a viscosity of 8.5-9.0 cSt. A 5w-30 might be 9.3-10.7 cSt. Both of these would be considerably higher (thicker) when cold (45-60 cSt). My point here, for the manufacturer to...

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

From what I've read, this is an apple/oranges comparison -- the 5.0 does not use oil pressure to affect the cams like the 3Vs. It does use oil to cool the pistons, though, so this argument might apply there.

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

Gotcha. Not sure that was the beef with the question, but my apologies for that. I'm sure the moderators will move it.

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

Holy shit, it's an honest question. Threads have wondered about warranty and oil weights for a while. With the shit about modifications and the warranty, I just wanted to know if changing oil weight has ever truly been a factor or only speculation. If you don't want to read it, then don't. I...

Anyone ever had a warranty voided for oil weight?

We've all read about the issue with modifications such as tunes. When the issue of oil weight is brought up, many feel switching to so much as 5w-30 would "void" a warranty -- at least on the engine. Has anyone ever had this happen? I'm not sure having a manufacturer conduct an oil...

    Ticking when start up

Probably need to differentiate which tick folks are talking about -- there are a few, and I suspect that folks posting here have different ticks. Is it #1 or #2 below? From what I've read, #2 is mostly from the passenger side, while #1 seems to be tough to isolate. #1...

My "piston slap" didn't start until I had almost 4000 miles. Of course, I had that many miles before the weather got cold, so I can't say for sure if it was there the whole time or not.
