I was at Adam's shop(ST Motorsports) today and test drove a new setup he has for the 4r70w. He has it tuned to shift automatically with a TPS. It has overdrive and lock up automatically. I did not want to switch to a 4R70W unless it shifted on it's own. I know some people don't care about shifting their car manually, but I was dead set against it.

The test drive was flawless!! It shifted a little firmer than the 5R55 but very nice. The trans controller has a switchable system that allows you to switch between race and street trans tunes on the fly. It also has a switch for the overdrive on and off. I was very impressed with the street manners of the trans.

During the test drive during cruise, medium accell, and hard accell the trans never got above 165 degrees and it had to be 90 degress out.

For anyone looking for a trans to handle serious power and still be streetable this is definitely for you. He has a complete kit available including the trans, converter, drive shaft, controller and tune. I have gone through many 5r55s but resisted replacing with another unit because of street driving issues. I am glad I waited until this system was ready.

Price?????
I think with the trans completely built ugraded parts, converter from PI, controller, tune and driveshaft it was something like 6500.00. I think that is cheaper than Lentech and it shifts automatically. I am not sure but I dont think other units out there will shift automatically. They are a manual shifting unit.

Nothing new about making a 4R70 fully automatic for a conversion, all you need is a trans controller from Baumann, TCI, PCS, etc...

The technology is nothing new, but like anything else, it's the guy behind the laptop. Almost anyone can do mechanical work - fabrication and tuning are the rare, exclusive art forms.

Great work Adam!

I have a used 4r70W sitting in my garage. I might have it built but I don't care about it shifting automatically. Does Adam sell individual parts? I'll probably need a driveshaft and a crossmember and maybe the manual valve body and converter.

I could probably call and ask but if somebody here knows, let me know.

Thanks

Can you do me a favor? I see your dyno numbers in your sig - can you let us know what the new dyno numbers are through this trans so we can see the loss? Being a lock-up, it shouldn't be as bad as the no lock-ups/no kickdowns, so I'd lbe interested to see what loss you see on the dyno through it.

Thanks and I promise I won't drive your car...:roflmao:

A local buddy of mine has a Saleen blower with a 3.4" pulley, and went through 3 5r55's. Luckily, the dealership kept replacing them...until last time! So, he went with a 4r70w from some place over in the Dallas area, not exactly sure where though. His does shift automatically, and is quite firm. He's also running a JDM mailorder tune as well. Ironically, he went through the transmisison's when he ran his HPP Racing tune, and some other tune from Marillo Motorsports or something like that. He then switched to the JDM MAILORDER tune and has been perfect since!

Why exactly won't the 4r70w's shift automatically for some of them?

Ken drove my car...I needed miles put on it and Adam did not have the time. So Ken took my car out, he also ran it at the track (my 4r70w survived). I am sure the customer knew.....ST family FTW:thumb:

Had he switched to a JDM install/tune before swapping the transmission, he likely would have been able to stay with a stock 5R55S. All tunes are not created equal.
