Hi everyone Lobsterboy here! well its Terry from Sussex in the south east of England. I have for about two and a half years owned a very smart looking 2011 5.0 GT (Shelby clone). Its a manual and has had some minor upgrades - an Airaid induction pipe/cone filter - cat back Flowmaster exhaust and an undisclosed tune put in it.

I bought the car with 55k (miles) and had no issue with the clutch until around 3 months - after changing gear 1-2 at high rpm the car stuck in gear with the pedal to the floor. Eventually I pulled hard on the stick and got it into neutral pulling the pedal back with my toes, and yes the clutch disc was now toast and slipping badly. I was 180 miles from home but I limped it carefully home. I couldn't source one here in the UK so I ordered an OEM kit from Rock Auto.

After getting a garage to fit it the pedal kept sticking to the floor I spoke to them and they thought it was something about them not being able to bleed the system properly. However after a bit of research I found out about the dreaded clutch assist spring and after following a video on youtube took mine out and the pedal never stuck again, however I was never happy with the new clutch which would often slip slightly and give off that tell tale smell if gunning it from standstill.

Move on two years and while I was accelerating hard this time from 2-3 de ja vu - it happened again complete lock up of the transmission! This time however after pulling hard on the stick and again lifting the pedal the clutch seemed OK so I carried on for around 40 miles when I had to pull up at some lights. As I pulled away there was no slipping but an ominous sound coming from the clutch. I continued another 30 miles and the return journey fine apart from the noise taking off in first and then almost yards from my home I smelt that terrible smell of a burnt out clutch and then the clutch pedal no longer did anything and I knew after just two years I was in for another clutch replacement.
This time I ordered an upgraded clutch kit from Rock two up from the OEM one and just had it fitted, it is very heavy compared to the one I had before. So I am thinking of replacing the Clutch Assist mechanism but before I do would you recommend a lighter spring from Steeda? I am also wondering if this would also cure yet again the very slightly slipping clutch (you can smell it) I was hoping never to smell that again from my Mustang. FYI the car has now done 65K.

Sorry if this is a bit long for a first post but I could do with some good advice, while there are plenty of S197's and S550's here in the UK, nearly all are Auto's!

Cheers Terry

Hi from Germany,
shifting problems 2->3 under hard acceleration is often a shifter problem, have you checked all the shifter bushings and connection rods?

Is it a Capri behind?

Yes GriffX a Group 1 historic race car. I was taken round Goodwood in it, a few weeks back where the picture was taken. Frightened the life out of me! So impressed I bought from the owner of the Mk111 the red and white Mk1 race car in my avatar!

Sorry off topic...

I am not best happy with the shifting on the Mustang, as well as the Capri which shifts sweetly I also have a 300bhp Focus ST Turbo which never has gear selection issues at 7k gear changes. When I went to pick up the Mustang the clutch cover diaphragm was completely mangled up. Is there a recommended shifter upgrade anyone can recommend?

Any advice on the assist spring would also be apricated - how many of you guys with manuals have taken them out altogether?

I guess most of the owners on here have autos?

Cheers
Terry

Been over 20+ years since I have seen a Capri like that. Father in law had one many many years ago too. Always a cool car.

I installed the MGW shifter which I really like, but I don't have a comparison with other brands.

My 07 doesn't have an assist spring, so cannot say anything.

I have an MGW shifter and it's so much nicer than the OEM. Most people use either an MGW or a Barton. I've heard great things about both. I think I put the lighter assist spring back in my car but didn't really notice a difference.

The oem clutch is the main culprit in the MT82 transmission that causes the high rpms lockouts and shifting issues. An aftermarket clutch cleared up 99% of those problems for me.

Hi Terry.
I wonder if the slipping issue and the clutch smell is due to the flywheel.
It may have needed to be skimmed or replaced when the clutch let go the first time but wasn't. Which would explain the slipping now with the new clutch.

My gt is a 2007 so doesn't have the clutch assistance spring but it could do with something as the previous owner of my car fitted a heavy duty clutch.

Hope you get it sorted.

Across the pond!
Welcome Terry another UK resident here (between Bath & Salsibury), I upgraded the shfter on my '06 SC Saleen to the MGW shirt shift kit and it works fantastic, as for the clutch issue I would agree with the previous poster and point the finger at the flywheel for a starting point.
If you use Facebook and not already a member but you should join Simply Mustangs UK, lots of knowledge on there and being UK based plenty of Mustang specialist garages for repairs

I can't help you with the shifting issues as I drive an automatic. But wanted to welcome another cousin from across the pond and let you know; you've come to a great site for help. Lots of knowledgeable helpful people on here. Good luck!

Sticking to the floor seems like a hydraulic pressure issue to me. Did you upgrade your clutch line with a stainless piece? Was the TOB replaced when you did the clutch with another OEM unit?

Thanks again for the replies and welcomes.

I hear that replacing the line with a stainless one is a good upgrade. Regarding the flywheel I cant tell as I paid a garage to do the job. However I would have thought that had there been an issue they would have told me, after all, it would be in their interest to reface it and charge me more. Trouble is the cost I have just been charged £600 to change a clutch and would have to pay that all over again to just look at the flywheel.

I’m sorry to inform you that the clutch “judder” that you feel in your foot when letting out the clutch peddle is a sure sigh the flywheel should have been resurfaced or replaced.
