I am buying a 2009 Explorer SPORTTRAC 4.6 3v in 2 days. I am going to rebuild the motor to replace the motor in my 2006 GT. What parts are incompatible and need to be swapped onto the Explorer motor?

I’ve heard something about an oil hole that needs to be plugged when swapping?

I have heard the same but I don't know if that was an earlier 2v modular block thing or if it still applies to our 3v cars. I think the block stayed pretty much the same since the modular inception. Seems like it's a quick fix to block that hole off though and doesn't hurt anything. Looking around the old interwebs it looks like a pretty straightforward swap.

Obviously there are some immediate differences on external parts because one is a truck one is a car so I would assume you'll be transferring over external parts from the old motor to this one.

  • Intake manifold and throttle
  • Wiring harnesses
  • Engine oil pan
  • Exhaust manifolds
  • Water pump & water crossover inlets
  • Radiator hoses
  • Knock sensors were canceled (not present in Ford Explorer)

Is the Explorer 3V an iron block? The Mustang 3Vs are aluminum block. I've read that iron and aluminum are interchangeable if you don't mind the weight difference. Not sure about the relative HP capacities if you're planning a high HP build.
