Blown 5.0
As much as I loved the car N/A seeing the power potential with these blowers I couldn’t resist. So I had Justin of VMP Tuning send me a Roush TVS supercharger kit to see what our car would do.
What I liked the most of the Roush kit is it looks factory installed. All the parts are Ford parts with Ford part #’s, like the GT500 throttle body, Intercooler pump and all the factory bend PCV and fuel vent hoses.
The hardest part of the job was the grinding of the front timing cover, but all in all this took me about ½ hour. I taped off the rest of the engine, marked the areas needing grinding and got to work.
Now I did this over the Christmas holiday at home so I could sneak out to the garage here and there to get things done and before I knew it the blower was on and it was ready to start.
I like to upgrade or “customize” anything I can, so one of the first things I did was call Metco Motorsports for one of their 90mm 6 rib billet idler pulleys. This replaced the black steal pulley that comes with the kit from Roush. More for looks, but it’s also about 15mm larger and that’s helps with more belt wrap and that will be needed when I put VMP’s 79mm S/C pulley on!
The other thing I did was add an auxiliary pusher fan to the Heat Exchanger. It’s a Jegs 11” fan, part #555-52101, that pumps 770 CFM. I wired it inline with the I/C pump to run when the pump is on. This should help cool the IA2’s when on the road course and drag strip. It's mounted to the side to allow room for the IC pump.
Of course I’m not going to running the stock airbox, so I grabbed a JLT Big Air painted Kona Blue and threw it on the car. I had to get on the back order list for the Carbon Fiber Big Air.
Because I like to road course the car, I had to figure out how to get a bar back on it. Well, simple enough, I ran back to the shop, grabbed a factory 07-09 GT500 strut bar and it fit perfect. It clears the blower by a good inch as well as the JLT Big Air with ease. I’m not sure about the stock tube and air box though. I painted it Kona Blue to match and it looks great. I did notice some light scuffing on the top of the bar as it just barely touches the hood liner in spots. I’m working on getting some 3M clear bra stripes to put on the top half of the bar to prevent scuffing the paint and we will release them as a new JLT Product painted to match your car. If you want black, hit up your local Ford dealer, it’s a direct bolt on.
I also added out JLT Oil Separator to the passenger side. We don’t have the ability to buy these hoses in bulk, so I did a how to install video to show you haw easy it is to add it our self. We will soon be adding a Separator to the web site that is specific for Roush, Whipple and FRPP blower cars. It will come with the separator loaded with 2 straight aluminum fittings, 2 clamps, detailed directions and a QR code to the install video. I did install one on the driver side, but will be testing that over the next few weeks.
While I was at it, I modded some more. After reading a thread here about removing the fog lights and adding gutter guards in their place I had to try it. The left fog light blocks the air inlet to the filter, so with it out you get a direct shot of fresh cool air right to the duct work. I roughly trimmed the material and just massaged it into place. I uses Plastic dip spray and bolted them in place with the stock fog light bolts. It looks pretty cool, almost BOSS like. Thanks to who ever posted the thread I saw on this, well worth the $7.
Over all I think it looks great and after my first drive, it’s awesome. It should make about 525-530 RWHP with the stock pulley and it feels like it. I plan on getting it on the dyno this week to get Justin to do the final tune as well as put the 79mm pulley on. Stay tuned…
